She had promised us a sign her leaving, final proof that her present life had ended well. It was well written because since the beginning of the book you got to know each character pretty well even if it wasn’t there time to narrate. When Grandmama died at 83 our whole household held its breath. Overall the structure was intriguing, keeping the reader captivated on knowing what was next and wondering what the next child would have to say about his/her experiences. This was interesting how Wayson Choy incorporated the hatred between those two countries in the end of his novel. The interesting part of part 3 of The Jade Peony was Suk-Lung gave the reader the inside scoop on the controversy between the Japanese and Chinese, along with the effects of the Pearl Harbour bombing. The two of them did everything together and he was deeply saddened when she passed away. Sek-Lung was very close to Poh-Poh because he had to stay home till age 7 and not go to school because of a bad lung infection. Choy finishes the novel by the youngest child Sek-Lung narrating the story, nearing the end it talks a lot about how hard it was for Sek-Lung to lose his grandmother Poh-Poh and how he felt her presence around the house with things like door closing or opening or even seeing her ghost. So far Wayson Choy has done an excellent job of sharing the experiences of the children, all of which have ups and downs and it’s easy to follow along which child Choy is talking about because the book is broken up into parts. After a boxing match with him he begins to cry and weep, Frank-Yuen holds him in his arms and comforts him, it was then that he realized he was gay.

Jung-Sum is an adventurous young teenager who enjoys the sport of boxing, in this part of the book it shows how he looks up to a middle aged drunk Frank-Yuen who eventually will end up being someone he loves. Moving forward to part two it brings you into the story of the middle brother Jung-Sum, who was actually adopted because of the death of his parents he had quite a rough childhood at an early age when he lived in British Columbia. Part one was specifically Jung-Suk talking in first person about how hard it was being a Chinese girl, getting treated less than equal, especially by her grandmother Poh-Poh who thought girls were of much less value.
